[hidden] Tonight’s benefit performance for Ashkenaz is presented by Bay Area treasure and Emmy Award-winning dancer Yaelisa leading her Caminos Flamencos dance troupe, joined by guitarist Jason McGuire “El Rubio” with his trio of musicians, plus guest singer Reyes Barrio from Sevilla. The cast of 25 dancers, musicians, and singers (including Yaelisa) present an eclectic concert of traditional and modern flamenco music and dance featuring her wonderful choreographies, as a fundraiser for their beloved Ashkenaz, where Yaelisa has been teaching and mentoring flamenco students since 1997. Caminos Flamencos offers a whirlwind entertainment of breathtaking color, costumes, irresistible flamenco guitar rhythms, and some of the most beautiful flamenco dancing this side of Spain. McGuire’s trio includes percussionist Marlon Aldana and upright bassist Paul Martin Sounder. The show will conclude with a rousing, invitational Fin de Fiesta by audience and company members alike. Caminos Flamencos has been nominated for two prestigious 2015 Isadora Duncan Dance Awards in San Francisco. In addition to many nominations, Yaelisa and her troupe have received an Emmy Award, NEA Choreography Fellowship, and the 2004 Izzie Dance Award for Best Company. In July the Academy Award-winning actress Rita Moreno visited Yaelisa’s dance class at Ashkenaz to shoot a scene for her 2016 film, “Remember Me,” featuring Yaelisa, her students, and guitarist McGuire. In addition to leading her company and being a master teacher, Yaelisa has captured the attention of critics around the world. The Los Angeles Times called her a “luminary” among flamenco dancers for her extraordinary rhythmic ability, which radiates pure emotion infused with sensuality. Raised by her Spanish mother, also a flamenco performer, Yaelisa was surrounded from birth by the rhythms, gestures, and vocal laments of the art in its purest form. Her artistic training has come from some of the great Spanish masters, including Ciro, Manolo Marin, Jose Galvan, and El Guito. Her mission is to present flamenco dance with a contemporary approach that echoes the “nuevo flamenco” movement happening in Spain today. [hidden] More Info below.
