Imagine an evening when history, art, and culture are intertwined with dance. The Varnum Memorial Library welcomes tango dancers Culest Bynum and John Coppens on Thursday, February 5 at 7pm. They will demonstrate Argentine tango accompanied by traditional music. John and Culest are longtime North Cambridge residents that have pursued an active lifestyle, including horseback riding...then they sought a change. They discovered Argentine tango at the Palais de Glace in Stowe, Vermont. Tango improves posture, balance, and motor coordination -- not to mention being fun. Most people imagine ballroom tango, which is stylized and theatrical. Argentine tango is based on improvisation. Though sequences of steps are used to teach the dance, every movement is individualized by speed, direction, and quality. Argentine tango can be performed in a dramatic way, but the emphasis is on improvisation and connection between partners. John and Culest will dance 5 tango dances: slow tango, fast tango, vals (waltz), milonga, and nuevo. After, they will answer questions and see if anyone wants to give tango a try. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call [hidden]. More Info below.
