Enjoy the music, dance and art of flamenco in an intimate setting, and experience the passion and warmth of Spain in the heart of Louisville. $10 cover, doors open at 7:30 Flamenco Louisville is an inclusive, participatory community of dancers, musicians, teachers and aficionados who wish to keep the Flamenco experience present in our lives though we live far from Spain. Through classes, performances and juergas (flamenco parties), this passion is shared with our home community of Louisville, KY and communities throughout the region. The commitment is to the practice and presentation of flamenco puro - the most authentic form of flamenco music and dance. The performers you will see tonight have dedicated themselves to developing their skills as flamenco artists through intense study and practice including travel to Spain and ongoing collaborations with excellent fellow-artists here in the US. Flamenco, a system of singing, music and dance, has its roots in the diverse cultures of Moorish-ruled Al-Andalus (on the Iberian peninsula of Spain and Portugal). The many flamenco song forms or “palos” were developed and preserved by people of Southern Spain – Andalucia – who lived on the fringes of society. It is the art form of an oppressed people, something that, in its purest form, takes place within the family or an intimate community. Eventually, it coalesced into a theatrical form to be performed on stages in café settings, then later in theaters. The many flamenco palos are organized around a recognized structure that allows musicians, singers and dancers to improvise. More Info below.
