Argentine Tango is one of the most popular social dances in the world. It emphasizes improvisation, being in the moment, and listening to your partner and the music. The music of tango covers a wide range of emotions: happy to sad, slow to fast, intense to relaxed. Argentine Tango is very different from Ballroom tango; it does not emphasize rigid form or memorizing steps. Do I need a partner to start dancing? Absolutely not! In fact, most people in tango lessons come alone. The instructor will pair you with a partner to start, and there will be lots of rotation throughout the class. Tango is a great way to meet new people and make great friends. Alternatively, it is perfectly fine to come with a partner! If you are very nervous, you can stick with your partner for the whole class, though you will learn much faster if you rotate. Do I need any experience? Absolutely not! All-level lessons are just what they say: they are for everybody! You’ll learn very quickly when dancing with people of all skill levels. The date doesn’t matter either. You can generally jump in on any given day. Do I need to dress up? What should I wear? No need to dress up for lessons and social dancing. Tango has special dances called milongas that are a fancier affair where dressing up is encouraged, but they will be advertised as such. The best thing you can bring to a lesson are shoes that are not too grippy on the bottom (leather or smooth rubber with light/no tread is good for this), but even that isn’t strictly necessary. You can dance in socks, if you’d like. “I can’t come because I’m bad at dancing/have no rhythm/have two left feet/ etc.” There is a common misconception that you have to be naturally good at dancing to take classes. This is absolutely not the case. Just like with any skill, nobody starts off being good at dancing. Anyone can learn, no mater where you start. You’ll be surprised at how fast you can become a great dancer by working at it. “I’m shy or self-conscious.” You might feel exposed dancing with so many eyes around. Don’t! Everyone is way more concerned with their own dancing than to worry how you look. Also, everyone understands, dancing is a journey; No one will judge you here. How can I start?
