State Street Ballet presents an evening of exciting contemporary dance at the Granada Theatre, February 18 at 7:30pm! Rite of Spring is the centerpiece of this program of contemporary masterworks, and it promises to be a captivating world premiere. The ballet will be created on the company by choreographer Edgar Zendejas, to the iconic score by Igor Stravinsky, who described it as "a musical-choreographic work...unified by a single idea: the mystery and great surge of the creative power of spring.” Zendejas, known for his deeply emotional and innovatively abstract movement style, aims to capture the “intoxicating, yet illusory beauty of Spring.” In the choreographer’s own words, he describes his interpretation of this masterpiece of orchestral music as “a point of reflection where Man/Woman release to the ecstatic dance between body and spirit, earth and the unknown.” The ritualistic and avant-garde nature of this piece will deliver much to contemplate in its dramatic exploration of movement dynamics. The evening will also feature Five by Gershwin by resident choreographer William Soleau, a piece he set on State Street Ballet in 2002 which was praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “breezy romanticism” and “uplifted elegance.” Kassandra Taylor Newberry’s (con)version, which debuted on the company to rave reviews in May 2016, will complete this trio of stunning illustrations of the best of contemporary ballet.
