Ballet For Black & Brown Bodies

Free w/ RSVP: 'Ballet for Black & Brown Bodies' is an exploration of the body as a site of knowledge, where participants are invited to realign themselves as tools of resistance. The normally 6-week studio series encourages participants to lean into the ways that gesture and meaning in gesture transgress the boundaries of 'race.' • May we position ourselves to remain open to perspectives, narratives, and ideas through our bodies? • Are we prepared to disrupt the normalized and naturalized narratives of coloniality? Participants should arrive wearing clothes in which they are comfortable moving, stretching, and sweating, along with dance shoes or socks. RSVP: [hidden] __________ Our program is led by Alyah Baker, who has trained and performed with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet of New York, Oakland Ballet, Richmond Ballet, and Carolina Ballet. In 2003 she received a B.A. in Sociology with a Dance Minor from Duke University where she trained under former Joffrey Ballet principal Tyler Walters, and Clay Taliaferro, a long time principal dancer with José Limón Dance Co., among others. __________ 'Ballet for Black & Brown Bodies' is presented by MATATU within a body of workshops that navigate self-determination, wellness, sovereignty, and roadmaps to the future. The workshops are free to the public and funded by Akonadi Foundation's Beloved Community Fund. MATATU is a platform for conversation, experience, and expression that helps ordinary people share their journeys. Together, we hope to enhance empathy and understanding of the global human condition. We are a fiscally sponsored project of Intersection for the Arts, and supported by KQED, East Bay Express, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Learn more about us at [hidden] More Info below.
