Flamenco Rosado: Gender & Sexual Identity in Flamenco Wed, Nov 29 | The Graduate Center, CUNY | Segal Theater 7:00pm – 9:00pm This performance and talk back with flamenco artists and choreographers from the company Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana artists in residence, tackles queerness within this art form originating from disenfranchised communities in Spain including the Moors, Sephardic Jews, African slaves, and Gypsies. Presenting new works based on multiple intersectionalities, Flamenco Vivo’s Director of the Center for Flamenco Arts, Leslie Roybal will facilitate a discussion with the artists about queerness, gender performativity, identity, and social justice within flamenco. PERFORMERS & SPEAKERS: Ryan Rockmore is a gay flamenco dancer, Spanish teacher, and researcher. He has performed in venues throughout New York, London, Madrid, and Sevilla. After completing a Master’s in Dance Anthropology from Roehampton University, Ryan continues to work at intersections of identity politics, gender performance, and flamenco. His recent essay, "Dancing the Ideal Masculinity", can be found in the anthology "Flamenco on the Global Stage." He recently co-founded the Al Margen Flamenco Dance Company, which seeks to push the boundaries of flamenco with respect to traditional customs, and explore what exists on the margins of the art form. Xianix Barrera began her formal studies in flamenco in New York City with Jorge Navarro, Nélida Tirado and Soledad Barrio. In Sevilla, she deepened her training with distinguished masters, and has taught master flamenco workshops for the Joyce Theater and New York City Center. In 2011, she founded her own dance company, Sabor Flamenco. Xianix tours Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca since 2013. Most recently she performed in Sevilla, Abu Dhabi and Copenhagen alongside flamenco legend Jose Suarez “El Torombo”. She currently teaches flamenco at New York City Center, Ballet Hispanico and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana in New York. Leslie Roybal studied Contemporary Dance and Flamenco at the University of New Mexico. Proficient in both Contemporary dance and Flamenco forms, Leslie has performed throughout the U.S. with Murray Spalding Mandalas, Fred Darsow Dance, Neville Dance Company, The Metropolitan Opera (in Carmen and La Traviata and on tour in Japan), Pasion y Arte, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and in the New York and New Jersey tablaos. She is the Director of The Center for Flamenco Arts at Flamenco Vivo and spearheads the Annual Boros Tour and The New York State Flamenco Certamen. As a teacher, Leslie leads lectures, workshops and Master Classes within Contemporary Dance and Flamenco ideologies. More Info below.
