Join us as we heat up this winter night by celebrating Brazilian Carnaval! We will offer a Brazilian Samba pre-milonga class and performance by Montreal-based Greta Polo (see class description and teacher's bio below). There will be Brazilian treats and danceable samba cortinas throughout the night for us to get a taste of what this Brazilian party is all about. We will end the night with some free-style samba dancing that will make you fall in love with the rhythm. The Brazilian Carnaval is a costume party much like Halloween is in the U.S., so you are strongly encouraged to dress up. 8:15-9:00: Intro to Samba No Pe Class with Greta Polo ($10) Description: Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Afro-Brazilian origin in 2/4(2 by 4) time danced to samba music . Samba no pé (literally, "samba in the foot") is a solo dance that is commonly danced impromptu when samba music is played. In this class you will learn the fundamentals of the basic samba step. Both women’s and men’s styling will be covered. Additional movements will be taught so you feel confident to shake, shimmy, and step like a dancer at the Brazilian Carnaval. No experience needed! About Greta Polo: Greta Polo stepped into her first Brazilian samba class three years ago and instantly became hooked. A few months later she found herself donning feathers and improvising samba in front of an audience of 200 people as part of the Pittsburgh Samba Group dance troupe. She has performed both improvised and choreographed samba with the troupe on a regular basis for the last few years. Greta recently relocated to Montreal, QC and is excited to be part of a new samba troupe, Levanta Poeira. Greta finds the energy of samba infectious and loves drawing the audience and fellow dancers into its celebratory spirit. Greta is also an Argentine tango dancer and holds a masters in Dance/Movement Therapy. More Info below.
