Here are some prominent folk dances from Kerala: Thiruvathira: Thiruvathira is a graceful group dance performed by women, typically during the festival of Onam and on the Thiruvathira day in the Malayalam month of Dhanu. It is characterized by elegant rhythmic movements and singing of Thiruvathira Pattu (songs). The dance is believed to have origins linked to the worship of Lord Shiva. Theyyam: Theyyam is a ritualistic dance form that combines dance, mime, and music. Performed mainly in the northern districts of Kerala, it involves elaborate makeup, costumes, and often represents mythological, divine, or heroic characters. The performers are believed to embody the deity they represent during the performance. The songs are often humorous and sung in a teasing manner, celebrating the occasion of marriage. It involves clapping and elegant, circular movements, along with singing traditional songs. It symbolizes feminine grace and community spirit.
