This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to take a Yangge class at a university for the aged in Shijiazhuang, China. Yangge (秧歌) is a traditional Chinese folk dance that dates back to the Song Dynasty and is especially popular in northern China. It’s known for its vibrant costumes, rhythmic movements, and the joyful energy it brings to community celebrations. In this video, I join a group of elderly Chinese women who have mastered the art of Yangge. It was a truly heartwarming experience that brought me closer to Chinese traditions and allowed me to connect with these amazing women through the universal language of dance.
