Today let me take you through an exploration of the folk dances of Madhya Pradesh. Grida is a dance performed to celebrate the abundant swaying Rabi crops in the field signifying joy and prosperity. Typically this dance form is characterized into three phases- Sela, Selalarki and Selabhadoni . In Sela the footwork is slow yet rigid whereas in Selalarki the footwork is fast and brisk and in Selabhadoni , the dancer not only accelerates the foot movements but also sways the entire body in exhilaration . Jawara Dance also known as harvest dance is performed during festivals and joyous occasions. Both men and women perform this dance with skill and vigour. Traditionally the female performers dance carrying a basket of Jawara crop on their head from which this art form got its name. Matki Dance derives its name from the Hindi word matki means a small earthenware pot. This dance form is mostly performed in the Malwa region by women on special occasions. In the Matki dance women balance earthen pots on their head and dance in a circular motion. Phulpati dance is performed mainly by unmarried girls during the Dashain festival . The seventh day of the festival is called Phulpati from which this dance got its name. The girls dress up in colorful costumes and perform this dance as a prayer to Mother Nature. Mach is a folk theatre form which is presented through traditional songs and dances. The word Mach is derived from Manch which means 'stage'. Mach is generally performed by men depicting stories based on religious, romantic, or social themes. Mach is truly a blend of music ,dance and theatre all in one.
