Today let me take you through an exploration of the folk dances of Himachal Pradesh. Nati dance is one of the most prominent folk dances of Himachal Pradesh. This is a dance of celebration for all occasions and festivals be it harvesting of the crops or marriages. It is a group performance where both men and women take part dressed in colorful traditional attire. Nati dance is performed in different forms in different regions of the state, such as the Shimla Nati, Kullu Nati, Shiv Badar Nati, Sirmauri Nati, to name a few. Nati folk dance is an essential part of any function and the spectators freely join in the performance. Dangi Dance is another popular dance form predominantly performed by female dancers. It is usually based on upon classic folklore . The dancers wear traditional costumes and perform holding hands while forming a semi-circular pattern. Chham Dance commonly known as the Masked dance is a lively folk dance associated with some sects of Buddhists. The dance is usually accompanied by musical instruments . The dances considered a form of meditation and an offering to the gods . This dance is renowned for its intricate costume and oversized masks. Kayang Mala Dance or the Garland Dance derives its name from the garland formed by the dancers. They weave their arms in a criss - cross pattern to resemble a garland or Mala. The dancers are beautifully dressed and heavily ornamented giving a visual appeal to the spectators. The Rakshasa or the Demon Dance popularly known as Chhambha Dance has its origins from the Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh. It is usually performed during joyous festivals such as Chaitol and Bishu. The notable feature is that the dancers perform wearing masks to depict the demons who are believed to be chased away by the forces of gods.
