History of Margamkali goes back to the 4th century when the Syrian Christian men of Kerala began to sing and dance in a circle in remembrance of their acceptance of the Way of Christ. Today, Margamkali is performed by men and women alike, across all Christian communities of Kerala, on the eves of weddings and festivals. Folklorist and founder of Institute of Folklore Studies, Thrissur, O. D. Varkey takes us through the history, practice and costume of this dance form.
